Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. Born in Harrah, Oklahoma, he was a right fielder dubbed "Big Poison", when he made his debut on April 13, 1926, for the Pittsburgh Pirates. For 20 seasons, he played with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1926-40), Boston Braves (1941-42), Brooklyn Dodgers (1943-44) and New York Yankees in 1945. Over the coarse of his career, he collected 200 or more hits on eight occasions, was the NL's Most Valuable Player in 1927, was an All-Star four times (1933-35 and 1937) and set the Major League record for consecutive games with an extra-base hit. He finished his career with a record of 3,152 hits, 1,627 runs scored, 113 home runs, 1,309 runs batted in and a .333 batting average. In 1952, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame and he is also the brother of Baseball Hall of Fame player Lloyd Waner. He died at age 62 in Sarasota, Florida. The Pittsburgh Pirates retired Waner's number 11 in 2007.
