After leaving the Army on 21 March 1883, he worked as a blacksmith for the Homestake Mining Company near Sturgis, South Dakota, for 49 years. They resided at 614 West Main Street, Lead, South Dakota for nearly 65 years. He retired from the Homestake Mining Company in 1932.
They had three children: Mary (born 13 June 1892 - she married P.L. Harms of Minneapolis, Minn.), Robert Nicholas (born 16 June 1884, Lead, SD), and Irene (born 30 August 1898, Lead, SD, - she married George C. Fehliman).
