US Congressman. He worked in editorial departments of various St. Louis newspapers and was an assistant to the election commissioners of St. Louis, (1911-13). He was the secretary to Congressman William L. Igoe, (1913-17, 18-21), clerk to the Committee on Foreign Relations of the United States Senate, (1917-18) and private secretary to Senator William J. Stone. After completing studies in law, he was admitted to the bar in 1921 and was legal advisor to Congressman Harry B. Hawes, (1921-26). In 1926, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-ninth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Harry B. Hawes, reelected to the next ten succeeding Congresses, serving until 1947. He died shortly after his final term at age 66.
