US Congressman. During the Civil War he enrolled in the 12th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 4, 1862, and was mustered in as a Corporal in Company K on September 4, 1862. Promoted to Sergeant on October 6, 1863, he served with the 12th New Jersey until August 10, 1864, when he was transferred to Company C of the 21st Veterans Reserve Corps. He saw the war through to it's conclusion, and was honorably mustered out on July 10, 1865. After the war he became a successful merchant and financier, eventually serving as president of a New Brunswick, New Jersey bank. In 1894 he ran as a Republican and defeated incumbent Democratic Congressman Jacob Augustus Geissenhainer to represent New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District. He then served from 1895 until 1911, having been defeated in the 1910 election by Democrat Congressman Thomas Joseph Scully. During his Congressional terms he served as Chairman of the Committee on Immigration and Naturalization, and as a member of the United States Immigration Commission.
