Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served in the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 75th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on April 6, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services". He entered the Regular Army at the conclusion of the war, but resigned at the rank of 1st Lieutenant in 1868. He served as a Justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court from 1871 to 1874, then as a Justice of the South Dakota Supreme Court from 1889 to 1893.
