Nevada Governor. Moving to Nevada in 1861, he was a farmer, a merchant and was appointed the recorder of Storey County. In 1864, he was elected as a Republican the 1st Nevada Governor, serving until 1870. While he was in office, the state government was organized, additional land was ceded to the state, plans were made for the first state capitol building and an Indian insurgence was dealt with. After his term, he retired from politics, moved to California and was active in milling until his death at age 75.
