Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as a Captain in the United States Regular Army, then was Colonel and commander of the 10th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 10, 1865. After the war he served breifly in the Regular Army (resigning in 1866 with the rank of Captain), and served in the Illinois State Legislature.
