John came to America from Ireland at the end of the potato famine period. Family lore says that he worked in a furniture factory in Kentucky for seven years.

He married his wife, another potato-famine immigrant, in Louisville, KY in January 1865, shortly after he was mustered out of the Union Army.

John CAHILL is listed on the Union Civil War Company Muster-in Roll dated 9 Sep 1861 at Camp Joe Holt. He joined for duty and enrolled on 1 Jul 1861 at Jeffersonville, IN [just across the river from Louisville, KY], for a period of 3 years. He was entered as a "Corpl" in Company G, 3rd Regiment (the Louisville Legion), Kentucky Foot Volunteers, at age 28 years. A note says "This organization subsequently became Co. G, 5 Reg't Ky. Inf. (Louisville Legion)."
He was honorably discharged at Louisville, KY (as Sergeant) on 14 Sep 1864.

On the 1870 U.S. census in Warrensburg, Missouri, he was a male citizen born in Ireland, with a wife named Mary, and two sons, the oldest William, age 3, was born in Kentucky, the younger, age 1, born in Missouri.

In 1880, he was still in Warrensburg, now age 51, occupation Farmer, with wife Mary and six children.

On 9 Aug 1887 he applied from Johnson County, MO for an Invalid Pension, claiming that he was disabled by "rheumatism, disease of bowels, piles and general prostration contracted Dec 1862 at Stone River, Tenn." He had been treated by the "Regimental Surgeon." The Adjustant General's Office of the War Department reported on 11 Nov 1887 that he was on the rolls from 31 Aug 1861 to 30 Apr 1863 (as Corpl.). In May & Jun 1863 and Jul & Aug 1863 he was a Sergt.-absent in convalescent camp at Murfreesboro, Tenn. (sick since 21 May 1863).
On 26 Dec 1887, John C. CAHILL, age 54, resident of Warrensburg, Johnson county, MO, signed an affidavit swearing that "About the last of December 1862 at on near Stone River Tennessee he contracted rheumatism and piles and also an affection of the boweles [sic] and general debility. That on the march from Nashville Tennessee and during the time of that Battle I contracted cold from Teriable [sic] Exposure Being without Tente Blankets of Shelter of any kind not even slowed fiers [fires?] by night which has caused Rheumatism of the Bowels and severe pyels lasting for months at a time together with general prostistion [sic] of my system at times this was in the month of December 1862 and fore part of Januay [sic] 1863. Was treated for the same at Lunett [Lunette] Palmer, Murfreesboro Tennesee while on detatched service of convalacent camp from some time Jun 1863 untill April the 10th 1864 when I rejoined my company at Knoxville Ten and served while then sick untill musterd out at Louisvile in October of same year."
Testimony submitted in 1887 by Patrick SHAY (age 28); Jenne CLIFFORD (age 69); and William W. BROOKS (age 28) who said that he had know John C. CAHILL for 20 years, and in the first ten years he was "teaming." "His health was so poor that at times he would have to employ a driver for his team."
Other testimony given from Louisville, Jefferson county, KY came an affidaviat from Lawson V. BROWN, who said "I know John C. Cahill was sick sevral times while in the servis we was to gether on the campign to Atlanta and a great deal of the time the works was full of watter our works and the enemys works was so [?] to [?] we had to stand in the watter here Cahill complained a great deal of rumitism of legs and bowels and while laying at Nashville in August 1864 we was orderd out on [?] after rebbel forces Here Cahill gave out and was left and did not get in for sevral days." In the same handwriting, same town, is affidavit of Patrick CRAIN (who signed with X). He said "About the time of the battle of Stone River we was exposed to vary suvier wether with out tents or fires. Here Cahill caught cold and complained a great deal of pain in his legs and looked bad till January 1863 when he was sent to the field hospital I did not see him agane untill Aprile or May 1864 when he joined his regament at Noxville Tenn he then looked bad and complained of rumutism he was wilt us on the march to the sea.
On 4 May 1898 John C. CAHILL signed and filed a voucher required by the Bureau of Pensions, Department of the Interior. In it he stated that his only wife's maiden name was Mary McCOY, married 19 [16?] Jan 1865 at St. Patrick's Catholic church, Louisville, KY by the Rev. Father Baxter, a Catholic priest. He listed nine children's names and birthdates. On 21 May 1912 he was still living in Warrensburg, Johnson county, MO. On 21 Apr 1915 he submitted more details, including his birthdate 15 Jun 1833 in Ireland. He was then living in Oswego, MT, a widower.

His wife Mary had died on 16 Jan 1902, and some years later he applied for a homestead in Oswego, Valley county, Montana.

According to his Montana death certificate, he died on 3 May 1920 in Wolf Point, Roosevelt county, Montana, a white male widower age 86 years, 10 months and 12 [sic] days. Birth date listed was 15 Jun 1833 in Ireland, son of John Cahill (maiden name of mother left blank).
