First husband of Mary Elizabeth (Pearson) Cooper Grindstaff (1841-1919). Robert and Mary were married on December 2, 1858 in Putnam County, Missouri. Robert was the father of Hannah Elizabeth (Cooper) Grindstaff McVay Johnson. Robert was the first-born child of Payton Cooper and Margaret C. (Updyke) Cooper. His siblings included: Charity, Hannah Elizabeth, Mahala Ann and William Cooper.

Robert was a Corporal in the Union Army - 2nd Missouri Cavalry, Co. C and 2nd Missouri State Militia Cavalry, Co. D. He enlisted February 26, 1862 in Alexandria, Clark County, Missouri at age 24 (he was actually 23) and was mustered in on March 17, 1862 in Alexandria, Clark County, Missouri. Robert was discharged on May 6, 1864 at Cape Girardeau, Missouri by reason of disability with the ranking of 3rd Corporal. According to Robert's pension papers, he died on May 14, 1864 in Putnam County, Missouri. He was 25 years old.

Military records say that Robert was 5'9" tall, light hair and blue eyes. Aged 24 when he enlisted (in 1862) and born in Mercer County, Ohio. While in service, his horse fell while he was riding on him and it broke Robert's leg. He later picked up an illness which he died from a little over a week from his date of discharge.

Please note: For his memorial, Robert's birth year was calculated from his parent's marriage date of August 10, 1838 in Mercer County, Ohio and census record of 1850 which Robert's stated age of 11.

As for his death date: the Pension application is the most accurate source of Robert T. Cooper's death, stating that he died "May 16, 1864, at Putnam County Missouri." The Pension Application having more legal status than a Headstone record. Discharge documents were of vital importance in anticipation of granting a pension, which Certificate number verifies that the pension was granted. The application was on behalf of his daughter Hannah Elizabeth Cooper age 14 in 1875, living with guardian step-father Cain Grindstaff and her mother in Sullivan County Missouri 1870. This information is important in establishing that Mary (Pearson) Cooper and Cain Grindstaff were married 5th August 1864, being three months after the death and burial of Robert T. Cooper.

Also note on burial info: Based on the information provided in two documents (his disability discharge papers in 1864 stating he was in St. John, Putnam, Missouri) and his headstone papers which state that his headstone was shipped to a cemetery that was about 4 miles from Central City, Putnam, Missouri, we believe that Robert may be buried at St. John Cemetery, West, in Sherman, Missouri. St. John is a village in Sherman Township. There is a slight possibility that he could be interred at West Liberty Cemetery in Putnam County, Missouri, but so far, there is no evidence to show that. Some of the early headstones in St. John Cemetery West (around the time period when Robert died) are starting to sink or become overgrown with brush.
