Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served in the Civil War first as Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the 1st Maryland (Union) Volunteer Cavalry, then as Assistant Inspector of Cavalry on the staff of Major General Franz Sigel. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war".
