Although he was called Kels, Jr, his full name was Kels Patrick Nickell. His middle name was chosen by his mother to honor her dad (Patrick Mahoney). His mother was Mary Mahoney Nickell. He was born in Camp Carlin, Laramie County, Wyoming. He worked for Union Pacific Railroad as a fireman and later became an engineer. He served in World War I as an engineer (in the 62nd Engineer Company). The Wyoming State Tribune noted in Oct 1918 that both Kels and his brother, Fred, were serving "somewhere in France." After the war, Kels returned to Encampment, was again employed by the Union Pacific. He married Ida Susan Pantle there on 22 Mar 1922 and raised their two children there. He still lived there until he was admitted to the Veterans Hospital in Cheyenne, Laramie County, Wyoming, where he died, 30 Jan 1966.
