Born in Farabiago di Milano, Italy, on November 17, 1879, Padre Giovanni Cappello CS., received his elementary studies at the Lyceum of Monza. While in his first year of theology, he joined the Scalabrinian Fathers, taking his vows on February 15, 1903, following his novitiate. He was ordained to the priesthood by the founder of the Congregation, future Saint, Monsignor Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, on December 19, 1903. Assigned to the Orfanotrofio Cristoforo Colombo of Sao Paolo, Brazil, he suffered greatly in this mission of his, like fellow Scalabrinian, P. Faustino Consoni, due to persecutions and calumnies.
Director of the Orfanotrofio S. Antonio of Rio Claro, back in Italy, in 1914, he was named vice-rector of the new Scuola Apostolica of Crespano del Grappa, of which he remained custodian until 1929. P. Giovanni passed away of February 6, 1930, aged 50, at the Sanatorium of Cavaso del Tomba, Treviso.
