Wife of Colonel John Augustine Washington. Eleanor married John February 16, 1843 and they lived together at Mount Vernon until 1860. They were the last private owners of the great president's home. The national landmark was sold to the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. Restoration began immediately and the estate was opened to the public.
