Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Sergeant, Company B, 7th US Cavalry. Awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle of the Little Big Horn, June 1876, where he was wounded during the hilltop fight. During the battle, he brought up rations and ammunition from the pack train, during a critical point, while under heavy fire from the enemy. He enlisted on 25 May 1861, at age 25, in Company K, 37th New York Infantry, at NYC. During the battle of Williamsburg, on 4 May 1862, he was severely wounded in the left hand. He recuperated in New York City until he was mustered out on 22 July 1863 as a Sergeant. He re-enlisted on 24 July 1863, in Company I, 13th New York Heavy Artillery, until the end of the Civil War, when he mustered out on 24 August 1865. On 17 Aug 1866, he enlisted in Company B, 7th US Cavalry, listing his previous occupation as a laborer. In 1871, he was promoted to Sergeant. He re-enlisted on 17 Aug 1881 as a farrier at Fort Yates, Dakota Territory, and was discharged on 11 June 1888, at Fort Meade, Dakota Territory, for disability (chronic bronchitis, and for an injury received on 10 Feb 1888). He died at the Soldiers Home, Washington DC, where he resided following his discharge.
