Mary was the daughter of John Watson Foster who was a Civil War Union Army Officer Commissioned as Major of the 25th Indiana volunteer Infantry in 1861 and then promoted to Colonel and Commander of 1st the 65th Indiana Volunteer
Mounted Infantry then the 136th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.
He was also a U.S. Diplomat an appointed as U.S. Minister to Mexico from 1873 to 1880, during this time Mary was born in Mexico, then as Minister to Russia from 1880 to 1881. Her mother was Mary Parke McFerson daughter of Alexander and Eliza Read McFerson.
