He was promoted to Captain, 2nd US Missouri Volunteers, on 7 Sept 1863, and was moved to Aide-de-Camp, from 18 May 1864 to 1 August 1866. In numerous engagements during the Civil War, he was brevetted to Major and Lt. Colonel on 2 March 1867 for services at Fisher Hill. Appointed 2nd Lt, 5th US Cavalry on 23 Feb 1866, and promoted to Captain, 7th Cavalry, on 28 July 1866. Promoted to Major and later, to Lieutenant Colonel, while serving as Aide-de-Camp to Major General Sheridan from August 1870 to August 1888. He was appointed to Colonel, AAG, on 25 Jan 1897, and to Brigadier General on 27 May 1898. He retired on 16 April 1902.
