Peter Tartaglione, 73, of Castleton Corners, a retired New York City Fire Department captain, died this morning at St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan.

Born in Brooklyn, he moved to Castleton Corners in 1957.

For thirty-four years, Mr. Tartaglione worked for the NYC Fire Department, stationed primarily in Brooklyn. From 1972 to 1978, he was stationed at Engine 158 in Mariners Harbor. He retired in 1988 as a captain.

Mr. Tartaglione served as the longtime recording secretary of the Columbian Association, a Fire Department club for firefighters of Italian descent. He was also a member of the Retirees Association of the Fire Department.

He enjoyed playing racquetball and watching hockey and football.

During his younger years, he served as a volunteer youth basketball coach at St. Rita's R.C. Church, Meiers Corners, where he was a longtime parishioner.

Mr. Tartaglione served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

"He was a wonderful father," said his son, Peter. "He was the heart and soul of the family."

In addition to his son, Peter, survivors include his wife of fifty-one years, the former Frances Keefer; sons David and Daniel; three daughters, Lynn Scamardella, Diane Fiore, and Anne Arsenault; and seven grandchildren.

The funeral will be held on Friday from the Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a Mass in St. Rita's. The time for the Mass has yet to be determined. Cremation will follow.
Entombment will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
