Benjamin Umfleet was born in January 1770 in what was then Hertford County and is now Gates County, NC. He married first Elizabeth (Hubbard) Umfleet (1775-1796) on December 28, 1788 in Gates County, NC. Elizabeth died in 1796 in NC.

Benjamin and his second wife, Mourning Polson were married March 29, 1800 in Gates County, NC. The 1800 NC census states that besides an adult male and a female, the family included a male and female both under 10 years of age, the step children of Benjamin and Mourning. This would be Elizabeth's children, Lucretia and Levi.

Benjamin purchased forty acres from the government (NE1/4 NW1/4 of Sec 20 T3N R13) on October 4, 1838 in Lawrence County, IL where the family made their home. They designated a family burial ground (Umfleet/Huston Cemetery) either in the woods on their property or on their son Seth's which was adjacent. Notes from the Union Primitive Baptist Church state that Benjamin and Mourning were in the county by at least March 23, 1833. The 1830 IL Census states that Ben and his wife, both older and without other family in the household, were counted in Lawrence County at that time.

The 1840 census showed the couple living alone in Lawrence County but by the 1850 census, Benjamin (80 yrs.) was living with Seth (45yrs born in NC), and Rebecca Umfleet (39 yrs. born in Kentucky), and two boys, Benjamin F (16 yrs. born in IL) and Ansell H(Harrison) (20 yrs. born in IL). Benjamin died December 1853 and was buried beside his wife Mourning at the family cemetery now known as Huston Cemetery.
