Mire married Angeline Hibbs (from PA), Feb. 14, 1858 in IN. They had 7 children: Ambrose, Eldora, Isabel ("Bell"), Mary, Edna, Nellie, and James ("Mack").
Mire came to Iowa with his mother, Nancy Ann Jenkins, Sept. 1, 1854.
Mire was a farmer. He owned over 1080 acres of land before he "retired" and gave most of the land to his children, Mack, Ambrose, Bell, Edna, and Nellie. They kept 80 acres, which was to be given to Eldora once they had totally quit farming (by this time, their other daughter, Mary, had died).
There is a story behind Mire's vast land holdings. It is said that he came home from California with $4000.00 in gold dust and bragged that he would marry any girl who could match that sum! That made $8000.00 - and land was cheap then. He married a Angeline Hibbs, who came from sturdy Pennsylvania Dutch parents.
Mire and Angeline seperated in 1903 but made up shortly after and took a trip across the ocean.
