Shuckhart, Mattie Chesemore

RICHLAND CENTER- Mattie Chesemore Shuckhart died unexpectedly at her residence on Monday, November 4, 1996. Mattie Elizabeth Chesemore was born on March 2, 1996, in Necedah, Wisconsin, the daughter of Wheeler and Sarah Elizabeth (James) Chesemore. The family were living there because Mr. Chesemore had sold his farm and they were moving to Rockbridge on April 1 to live on the farm owned by his father, Newton Chesemore. The first four years they lived in the log cabin which Newton Chesemore and his wife, Mary Fogo, had built when they were married after he returned from the Civil War. Mattie's younger brother, Albert, was born in this cabin as their father was in 1871. Mattie attended the grade school at Rockbridge, graduating in 1922. She then went to Whitewater to live with her sister, Mayme, to attend the College High School from which she graduated in June 1926. In 1926-1927 she attended the Wisconsin Business College in La Crosse, until she was offered a newly created position in the State Teachers College as secretery to the director of the training school, on May 1, 1927. She continued in this position until 1940, when she came to Viola to live with her husband whom she had married on July 3, 1938. While in grade school she attended the United Brethren Church at Buck Creek, but when she went to Whitewater she joined the Methodist Church and was baptized there when she was seventeen years old. The years she lived there she attended church regularly, taught Sunday School, and was a member of the Epworth League, and assisted with the church programs. On July 4, 1936, while home on vacation she met Vern Shuckhart, and even though she never planned to marry, they fell in love, and two years later on July 3, 1928, they were married by Reverend Keith Peckham in the Beulah Wesleyan Church at Gillingham. They lived on a farm off County Trunk A in Bloom Township from 1940 until Vern died of a heart attack on July 22, 1976; but Mattie continued there until 1982 when she moved to Richland center. While living in town she was interested in the Thrift Shop and was the treasurer for three years, after Lily Hansen requested she be released of the job. She also joined the W.H. Bennett Women's Relief Corps and was appointed secretary, an organization in which were formed many beautiful friendships. Survivors include many nieces, nephews and special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Rollie, Albert, Newton, Charlie and George Chesemore; and two sisters, Mayme Zierfuss and Mary Beatty. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 7, 1996, at the PRATT MEMORIAL CHAPEL with Reverend William Van Antwerp officiating. Burial will be in the Fancy Creek Cemetery. Friends may call at the PRATT MEMORIAL CHAPEL on Wednesday, Noember 6, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., and on Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Brewer Library for books.
