Artist's Model. Her image as captured by the great portraitist John Singer Sargent is a reminder of a long bygone style. Almina's portrait was one of a dozen commissioned by her father, London art merchant Asher Wertheimer, the largest such order Sargent ever received. The painter, who typically spent a good deal of time deciding just how to depict each subject, presented her costumed as a Persian harem girl complete with studio prop Indian sarod, a fashion that was considered exotic and 'alluring' at the time. Wertheimer married Antonio Fachiri in 1915 and lived her entire life in the London area; today, she can be visited at the Tate Gallery both in her 'Oriental' guise and, with two of her siblings, dressed in typical British attire of the day.
