Christopher J. Hamlin, one of the pioneer settlers of Winnebago county and of Thompson died suddenly at 6 o'clock Saturday morning, June 4, 1921, at the home of his brother, Ole Hamlin, southeast of town. His death was due to heart trouble with which he had been afflicted for some time.

Christopher J. Hamlin was born in Norway on Oct. 22, 1842. He came to this country in early youth, making his home in Dane County, Wisc., where his parents soon afterward joined him. He came to Winnebago county in 1872 and on Oct. 2 of that year was married to Betsy Severs. They made their home on a farm near Forest City, moving later to the vicinity of Thompson. Five children were born to their union: Mrs. Henry Erickson, Mrs. Wm. Ozmun and Otto, Jay and Miss Cora Hamlin, all of Thompson .

They moved to the vicinity of Thompson before the railroad was surveyed through this section and boarded the surveyors at their home on the farm now owned and occupied by C. K. Lura. Later they built and conducted the first hotel in town. It was built on the site of the dwelling in which Owen Peters now resides. Later it was moved to Jackson street and its lower story is at present used as a billiard hall by A. B. Kinden.

Besides his wife and children, deceased leaves a brother, Ole Hamlin of Thompson and two sisters, Mrs. Alex Amber of Pelican Rapids and Mrs. Erick Alrick of Adams, Minn.

Funeral Monday conducted by Rev. K. Xavier at West Prairie. Interment was made in West Prairie Cemetery.
