Scholar, Philosopher. Born in Matsumoto, Japan, he attended Tokyo Imperial University, graduating in 1899. He became a pioneer in the study of Western philosophy and religion in Japan. His early writings included 'An Outline of the History of Western Philosophy' (1897), 'The Origins of Christianity' (1909), and 'A Study of Spinoza' (1905). He became the first to teach the history of Western philosophy at Tokyo Semmon Gakko. Other works included 'History of Western 'Religious Thought' (1921), 'Religious Philosophy' (1935), and 'Time and Eternity' (1943). He become a lecturer in philosophy first at Tokyo University and later at Kyoto University, retiring in 1947.
