Daimyo. Born in Japan, a younger son of a middle-ranking samurai. He succeeded to daimyo in 1844, but was forced out during the Ansei Purge in 1858. He returned to prominence in subsequent years as a member of the Union of Court and Shogunate party and, in 1863, was made a member of the imperial advisory council. In 1871, as a representative of the Japanese government, he signed the Sino-Japanese Friendship and Trade Treaty. In 1879, he was one of two given the duty of escort to visiting American, U. S. Grant. In 1881, he hosted King David Kalakaua of Hawaii on a state visit to Japan. That same year, he was one of three who he helped edit the 'Tokugawa reiten roku,' a compilation of records of Tokugawa shogunate ritual protocol. He was created a peer in the new national aristocracy after the abolition of the domain (han) system. He died at age 75 in Tokyo.
