Classical scholar and author. One of six children, he was educated at the grammar school at Bury St. Edmunds, then to Gonville and Caius College and in 1811 he received his B.A. degree. He received a classical lectureship and fellowship at Emmanuel College. While in Germany, he met many great scholars and this prompted the publication in the "Museum Criticum" a paper on the state of classical German literature. A major work was a translation of Matthiae's "Greek Grammar" in 1816. He was also planning a Greek-English lexicon prior to his early death.
