Minnie Whitcomb Dies at Age 83
Miss Minnie E. Whitcomb, 83, died Wednesday evening at her home, 1020 Ninth street, Marion, following a long illness.
Born June 15, 1857[sic], on the farm of of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin H. Whitcomb, eight miles northwest of Marion. She had always lived in this locality. She taught in the rural schools for 25 years. She joined the Jordan's Grove Baptist church when a young girl. She was a member of the Marion Presbyterian church and of Grove City Rebekah lodge No. 35. She was a former president of both the Marion Women's Christian Temperance Union and also the county union. She was active in church and Sunday school work until ill health prevented her attending services.
Surviving are a brother, Bert Whitcomb, Springville; and three sisters, Mrs. Mertie Jones, Brookings, S.D., Mrs. Mary Zinser, Coburg, Ore., and Miss Metta Whitcomb, with whoms she made her home.
Services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Yocom-Murdoch chapel by the Rev. C.V.R. DeJong. Burial will be in Oak Shade cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel.
The public library will be closed during the funeral. Members of the Rebekah lodge will attend the services in a group.
