He served during WWII in the U.S. Army Infantry in the European Theater where he received both Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals. He received a BBA from Southern Methodist University in 1948. He retired as President and CEO of Gulf Coast Coca Cola Bottling Company. He then served 12 years as President and CEO of Gulf Coast Canning Company in Jackson, Mississippi.
