Jazz Musician. Born James Hubert Blake in Baltimore, Maryland, he was a pioneer ragtime pianist and composer. In 1921, he wrote the Broadway musical "Shuffle Along" which was one of the first musicals ever to be written and directed by an African American. His other compositions included such hits as "Bandana Days", "Charleston Rag", "Love Will Find A Way", "Memories of You" and "I'm Just Wild About Harry". The musical "Eubie!", which featured the collective works of Blake opened on Broadway in 1978. He continued to play and record into late life.
