Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Spent most of his Civil War service on the staffs of several prominent Union Generals. He received a commission of Major, and served as an additional Aide-de-Camp to Major General Joseph Hooker. When General Hooker was removed as commander of the Army of the Potomac, and General George G. Meade was given that command, Benjamin Ludlow was retained for General Meade's staff, serving again as an Aide-de-Camp. Later, he was detailed to served as the Inspector for Cavalry for the Army of the James, serving on the staff of Major General Benjamin F. Butler. Finally, he was advanced to Lieutenant Colonel, and finished out the war as commander of the 4th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on October 28, 1864 for "gallant and meritorious services at Dutch Gap, and in the attack upon the enemy's works at Spring Hill, Va."
