Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant of the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry, then as a Captain and Aide-de-Camp on the staffs of Brigadier General Romeyn B. Ayres and Brigadier General Adelbert Ames, then finally as Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the 32nd Maine Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". He was a successful financier and farmer after the war, and played a large part in founding the Episcopal Church of Saint Mary in Falmouth, Maine, where he is interred in a crypt under the altar with his wife and daughter.
