Indonesian Emancipation Heroine. She is one of the famous feminist Indonesian women, known for her struggle for equal rights between men and women in the late 19th century. Her fight included confronting Javanese tradition to keep girls inside the house until marriage. She was a very smart woman with high intelligence. She was always concerned about Indonesian women in the future, and established a Javanese girls' school by her own method. Her letters, published by Mr. J.H. Abendanon, were Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang, another collection of Kartini's letters was titled Just Call Me Kartini Only (1962). As an appreciation to her pioneership efforts, Kartini was declared a national heroine (2 May 1964) and 21 April was pronounced as a National Day or Kartini Day in Indonesia.
