Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was born "one mile east of Carlisle," the son of William M. and Elizabeth (Parker) Henderson, he was an 1845 graduate of Dickinson College, then studied law and admitted to the bar. He married Margaret A. Webster on June 7, 1853, in Baltimore, Maryland, and fathered William M, John Webster, Margaret, Elizabeth, and Rebecca. In 1860, he was a lawyer living with his family in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He enlisted at the stated age of thirty-four in Harrisburg April 21, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Washington DC as captain of Co. A, 7th Pennsylvania Reserves (36th Pennsylvania Infantry), the company he helped recruit. Wounded in the left shoulder at the battle of Charles City Crossroads on June 30, 1862, he returned to duty and was promoted to lieutenant colonel to date August 1, 1862. Again wounded, this time shot through the body at the second battle of Bull Run on August 30, 1862, he was hospitalized and too infirm to continue active duty. He resigned his commission effective April 30, 1864, and became provost marshal of Pennsylvania's 19th District.
