Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as Corporal of Company K, 12th New York Infantry. During the actions at Blackburn Ford, Va., on July 18, 1861 in the First Bull Run Campaign, Corporal Cross's regiment was driven back by Confederate forces. He refused to retreat with the rest of his unit, and returned fighting to the skirmish line despite obvious danger. He was awarded a Medal of Honor for this act in 1898.
