Former St. Louis Belle Came to Colorado With Her Husband in 1872
Mrs Julia Pratt Gilpin, widow of the late Governor William Gilpin, first territorial governor of the state of Colorado, died late Saturday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs Lee D Allen, of St Louis, after an illness of many months. Death was cause by hardening of the arteries.
Mrs Gilpin was one of the famous Pratt sisters, a family of five girls, the daughters of General Bernard Pratt, of St Louis, who were famed as the most beautiful women in that city. She was born 74 years ago, and her girlhood was spent in the Missouri city where she and her sisters were belles of the most exclusive French and Southern society.
Governor Gilpin always had been in love with the beautiful Julia Pratt. A native of Missouri himself, and having held high offices in the state, he went back often, even after he had cast his fortunes with the West, and much of his time while in Missouri was spent in St Louis.
In the early '60's, Julia Pratt married Captain John Dickerson of the United States army, a distinguished soldier. He lived but a few years after their marriage.
Governor Gilpin, he already had that high honor conferred on him, being appointed in 1861, returned to St Louis sometime after he heard of Captain Dickerson's death and resumed his courtship. He was married to the young widow in February 1872, and they came immediately to Denver.
Even since the death of her husband, a dozen years ago, she has regarded Denver as her home, although much of her time has been spent visiting her chidren, who reside in various parts of the United States.
She was a devout Catholic, and High Mass will be sung at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral either tomorrow or Thursday. One of her daughters, Mrs E J Dodson ("Polly" Gilpin) of New York, is bringing the remains to Denver. The body will be placed in the Horan funeral chapel.
Mrs Gilpin was the mother of six children, all of whom survive her. By her first husband she had four children, Mrs Louise Sherwin, Sidney J Dickerson, and Mrs Otis Spencer, all of whom live in New York, and Mrs Allen of St Louis, at whose home she died. Mrs Spencer formerly lived in Denver. Mrs Gilpin had one son and one daughter by Governor Gilpin, Louis P Gilpin, of California, and Mrs Dodson. She also leaves six grandchildren.
Interment will be at Mt Olivet.
