Philosopher, Author. A voluminous writer, he was a driving force amongst the thinkers of the French Enlightenment, and one of the leading contributors to the Encyclopaedia. Supported by Catherine the Great of Russia, he went to live for some years in St. Petersburg. Also wrote vivid social satires.
