US Congressman, US Senator. He was elected as a Whig to represent Connecticut's 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1845 to 1849. He was then elected as a Republican Senator to the United States Senate, serving from 1857 to 1869. His opposition against the Impeachment of President Andrew Johnson led to his losing his Senate seat.
