[Herald Dispatch, May 19, 1970]

Herbert Carroll was born October 20, 1895 to Daniel Boone Carroll and Amanda Simmons Carroll in Carter County, Kentucky. He was the 14th of 15 children. He was raised on a farm located on Everman Creek in Carter County. On March 20, 1918, at the age of 22, he married Helen Swanagan in Grayson, Carter County, Kentucky. They were blessed with two daughters, Wilma and Thelma. Tragedy struck right after Thelma's birth in 1921 when Helen died from complications of childbirth. Herbert was left to raise his two daughters alone. In an effort to help, Herbert's sister, Jennie Lynn stepped in and began raising Wilma and Thelma as her own. He later married Elifair Hicks and they had four more children: Herbert, Claybourne, Basil, and Betty. Wilma and Thelma stayed with Jennie even after he married Elifair. Herbert lived out the rest of his life in Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia and, at the age of 74, died on May 17, 1970. He was buried in White Chapel Memorial Gardens.
