Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in England, he served during the Civil War as Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the 4th New York Volunteer Heavy Artillery regiment. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services in the campiagn against Richmond in 1864 and in the battles before Petersburg, Va." He was a member of the Military Commission that tried and convicted Confederate Captain and Andersonville Prison commander Henry Wirz of war crimes.
