Bessie Lee Carroll was born on January 1, 1887 in Grayson, Carter County, Kentucky to Daniel Boone Carroll and Amanda Simmons Carroll. She was the 9th of 15 children. She lived with her family in a cabin on Everman Creek. On June 3, 1911, at the age of 24, Bessie married Robert Edward Fugate in Catlettsburg, Boyd County, Kentucky. They moved to Huntington, West Virginia where they were blessed with two sons:Carroll Francis and Truman Warren. For awhile they lived at 280 Smith Street before settling into their home at 2524 Collis. Bessie was a devoted mother and daughter, eventually taking in her mother, Amanda, when her father died. Bessie took care of her mother until her mother's death. Bessie died on March 26, 1957 after suffering a heart attack at the age of 70.
