Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served during the Civil War as Chaplain of the 15th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during the Battle of Stones River, Tennessee on December 31, 1862. His citation reads "Went to the front during a desperate contest and unaided carried to the rear several wounded and helpless soldiers". His Medal was awarded to him on April 4, 1898. He was one of three 15th Indiana Infantry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being Sergeant George L. Banks and 2nd Lieutenant Thomas N. Graham). Additionally, he was one of three Union Army Chaplains to be awarded the Medal of Honor (the others being Francis B. Hall of the 16th New York Infantry and Milton L. Haney of the 55th Illinois Infantry).
