Death Claims Centenarian

Haven - George Sheffield Bishop, Haven community's oldest resident, died on the farm he homesteaded at 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

A resident of the county for 77 years Mr. Bishop celebrated his 100th birthday with open house Dec. 16.

Mr. Bishop probably had more firsts to his credit in Reno county than any other citizen. He was the first school teacher in the county, opening Reno district no. 21 in 1873, taught district no. 4 in 1874 and Bethel district no. 35 in 1875.

During the summer of 1872 he helped lay the tracks of the Santa Fe into Wichita and was on the crew that brought the line's tracks into Hutchinson.

Mr. Bishop was born in New York state Dec. 16, 1848 and moved with his parents to Michigan in 1855.

The pioneer came to Kansas in 1870 and after establishing his home here returned to Plainwell, Mich. in 1887 to wed his boyhood sweetheart, Sarah Casson.

Mr. Bishop is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Fred Page, and a grandson Donald, who live on the homestead where he died.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. in Haven ethodist church, Rev. Karl Magnusson officiating. Burial will be in the Haven cemetery.
