Neoclassical Composer. He was perhaps his nation's most noted writer of theatrical and symphonic music in the post-war era. Raised in Tallinn, he was educated at that city's Conservatory and in 1955 produced his first significant piece, a song cycle based on the poetry of Sandor Petofi. He won a Gold Medal at the 1956 Moscow Festival for his "Concerto Grosso", then gradually built an international reputation. Probably his most noted piece is the 1972 "Trumpet Concerto" which has been performed widely and recorded several times. Other works of note include the 1971 ballet "Johanna tentate" and the opera "Cyrino de Bergerac" which was premiered in 1976. In 1995 he wrote "Celebration Fanfaresse" to honor the 50th. anniversary of the United Nations, the piece receiving its New York world premiere under the baton of Maestro Neeme Jarvi. Tamberg held a professorship at the Tallinn Music Academy from 1969 to the end of his life. At his death, there was a significant discography of his music.
