Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. He entered the US Navy at Pennsylvania and served as a Ship's Corporal. His citation reads "For rescuing from drowning a boy serving on the USS Constitution at the Navy Yard, Norfolk VA, 16 November 1879". Thayer was buried in an unmarked pauper's plot at Philadelphia's Old Cathedral Cemetery, and the cemetery has no record showing his burial location within Section T.
