William Leon McClelland was born August 10, 1897 in Ivanhoe, Bulloch County, Georgia. One of ten children, he was the son of William Madison McClelland and Manie Veranda Glisson McClelland. He and his wife Ruby Robena Bell McClelland had five children: Tarver Lee McClelland, Nevada Faye McClelland Brittingham, Shirley Gwenell McClelland Owens Holt, Doris Glenda McClelland Carpenter, and Melba Jo McClelland Royal Lott. He was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church in Bryan County, Georgia. Leon died at age 84 on January 3, 1982 in Statesboro, Bulloch County after a long illness and is buried at Old Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery in Bulloch County. His funeral was at the Smith-Tillman Mortuary in Statesboro. His ancestry was Scots, Scots-Irish, English, German, and--through the Martin and Strickland surnames--Native American (Lumbee).
