Stella was the oldest of the six children of Zora (Miller) and Henry Rushmore Packard. Growing up in Onondaga, Ingham County, Michigan, she helped with the care of her five little brothers and the family farm.
At the age of twenty, Stella married Fred A. Smith, her family's next door neighbor. They remained in Leslie/Onondaga, where they became parents to two girls.
Stella passed away at age 90, outliving all of her siblings but one.
