Andrew Charles Elliott
Birth: Jun. 22, 1829, Ireland
Death: Apr. 9, 1889
San Francisco
San Francisco County
California, USA

4th Premier of British Columbia. He served in this position from February 1876 until February 1878. Born in Ireland, in November 1851 he studied to become a lawyer at Lincoln's Inn in London, England, and was called to the bar in 1854. The following year, he emigrated to the Colony of British Columbia, Canada and was admitted to the bar in 1859 and served in various positions, including Gold Commissioner and stipendiary magistrate After the Colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia were merged in 1866, he was appointed provincial High Sheriff. In September 1875 he entered politics when he was elected to the British Columbia Legislative Assembly from Victoria City and became Leader of the Opposition, even though he was not affiliated with any political party. In February 1876 he became Premier, replacing George Anthony Walkem whose government lost a Motion of No Confidence. However, Elliott's government didn't prove to be much better and failed to make headway with the Canadian government to build a railway to the Pacific. In February 1878 his government was defeated in the general election and he resigned his position, and was replaced by George Anthony Walkem (whom he had replaced two years earlier). In October 1884 he served as one of three commissioners who investigated the First Nations troubles at Metlakatla, US Alaskan Territory. He suffered from poor health in his final years and in March 1886 he relocated to San Francisco, California where his daughter resided and died there at the age of 59. (bio by: William Bjornstad)
