Roman Catholic Bishop. He was appointed as the first Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dubuque, Iowa (now an Archdiocese) on July 28, 1837, and ordained as a Bishop on December 10 of the same year. In 1839, he founded the Saint Raphael Seminary, which is now a private liberal arts college. The school was renamed several times until its centennial year of 1939, when it was finally named Loras College in honor of the founder.
