In Loving Memory

John Lowell Gardner lll, called "Jackie", was the young beloved son of John "Jack" Lowell Gardner and Isabella Stewart Gardner. He became ill with pneumonia and died in 1865. His death was the tragedy of Jack and Isabella Gardner's lives. Isabella and Jack were distraught after young Jackie's death, and Isabella could not seem to come out of the depression. Upon Doctor's orders Jack took her on a long trip, which slowly helped them both, and on this journey began their lifetime passion for collecting fine art.

The same year of 1865 Jacks's sister -in-law, Harriet (Armory) Gardner died, and his brother Joseph Peabody Gardner was left to raise his three children alone. Joseph loved and cared for his children over the next ten years until he passed away in 1875.

Jack and Isabella Gardner adopted their three teen-age nephews, and loved them as their own children. One of the nephews, Augustus Peabody Gardner, became a distinguished member of The House of Representatives, representing Massachusetts for many years in office. He resigned to join the US Army in World War l and died from pneumonia during his tour of duty. He was buried in Arlington Cemetery.
