He was the co-pilot aboard the "Enola Gay", the United States Army Air Corps B-29 Superfortress bomber that dropped the "Little Boy" atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945 towards the end of World War II. After the war and his honorable discharge from service, he became an commercial airline pilot.
