American Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on February 22, 1865 for his actions as a private with Company A, 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, US Army, at the Battle of the West Harpeth River near Brentwood Hills, Tennessee on December 16, 1864. His Medal of Honor citation simply reads" For Capture of Confederate guidon."
